About Herkimer Diamond Quartz crystals :
Herkimer Diamonds are a quartz crystal variation that are found only in the foothills in Herkimer County, NY, USA, i.e. The Herkimer Name they are known world wide for. It is important to educate yourself about what you are purchasing in all aspects, especially in the Gem and Mineral world.
Do not be fooled by the smaller DT similar quartz beings sold as Herkimers from China, Mexico, Tibet, Africa and Other Locations. Though there are similarties the look alike crystals are not identical.
Herkimers from NY are harder than regular Quartz, 7.5 compared to 7 on the mohs scale.
Herkimers formed approx. 500 Million Years ago in small pockets of dolostone / dolomite Limestone and bedrock, the 3rd hardest rock in the world. Most mining is done by hand, a very painstaking process. Machines can be used to remove over burden.
Herkimer Diamonds are the most valuable and clearest of all quartz and are sought the world over by collectors and for their Metaphysical properties. All my Herkimer Diamonds come from Private Miners on land in Herkimer County, NY. ALL mined by Hand.
These amazing crystals get their name because they are similiar in shape and clarity and sparkle to real diamonds. They were named after General Herkimer who mistook them for real diamonds when he saw them in the 1700's.
Herkimer Diamonds naturally form with 18 facets and are double terminated (points at both ends). They have a hardness of 7.5 on the Mohs scale of Hardness, with 10 being the Hardest (real diamonds). The smaller "Gems" can be flawless in clarity that has no Rival in the quartz world, they begin to have inclusions over 1/2" in size. They can grow up to 7"+ but most are in the small to 4" range.
AA Grade Crystals account for less than 1% of all the crystals mined, with A grades making up around 2 to 3%. They are not abundant at all in mass quantity.
Herkimer Diamonds are known as the stone of "attunement" for Reiki and other Energy healing & Metaphysical practices. They are also said to be stones of InnerVision, and are useful in Dream work, Energy work and meditation.
When looking for your Herkimer Diamond it is important look carefully, but with a little hunting you should be able to find that crystal you are looking for. Make sure you are getting them from a reliable source, as many people claim to be selling Herkimers but they are Chinese quartz or Tibetan, African, Pakistan or Mexican crystals. Make sure they are coming from Herkimer County / Upstate NY.
It is said metaphysically that When put between any two chakras they will help align and attune the energy of those chakras. AA Grade crystals 1"+ or A grade crystals over 2" and floaters (no contact marks) are extremely rare and expensive if you can find one.
