Herkimer Diamond Quartz Crystal
Location : Middleville, NY (Herkimer Diamond Mine & ACE of Diamonds)
- Gem Crystals (A, A+ or AA grade) over 1/2" (12.5mm) are very rare, TThese are called Floater Crystals meaning there are no contact marks from the matrix. These crystals become even rarer at 1" in size with good clarity, 2"+ clear is rarely seen, especially in single crystals with no contacts or attached crystals. (Other grades we offer are C, B & B +).
- Clusters are amazing, most have 1 or more crystals fall apart in the pocket over the 500 million years since they formed. They are usually reconstructed professionally using special epoxy for quartz. They are not considered "repairs" as the crystals only fit together at the Key Marks and are not "Breaks". This is well known by collectors and is the accepted in the market, the best ones in the world have been reconstructed to some degree.
- Hand size larger crystals in the 2" - 4" range are another formation you see often, at this size they tend to have inclusions, carbon, internal explosions from gas during formation, etc. Some are extremely rare Skeletal Crystals - interrupted growth, many of these are Smoky. Water Clear crystals over 2" if you can find them in this size, start running in the the 1000s of dollars.
- Perfection is nearly impossible - Most Crystals have a contact mark or flaw of some kind (where it was attached to the martix), Small Dings / Blowouts from Formation & movement in the pocket over 500 million years, etc. Please see all pictures for each crystal to see. Email us if you have any questions.
These are extremely rare in any quantity, as most crystals over 10mm have inclusions of some kind. We are very fortunate to network with a small group of local miners right here in NY. I know many of them personally and have developed great relationships over the years. These amazing double terminated Crystals are what started it all for IVC back in 2006. Herks are harder than normal quartz at around 7.5. These double terminated Crystals are some of the best in the World.
The work that goes into hand mining these is demanding on every level. The sorting & cleaning requires hours of painstaking work. Thus the prices these amazing crystals command. Most never see bulk quantities of this quality, the number of pockets one must mine requires an entire season of mining, if not more to acquire.
Herkimer Diamond Quartz Crystals come from a small area of Central Upstate NY, primarily from Herkimer County and the Middleville & Herkimer, Little Falls area, also St. Johnsville & Fonda. This is the 3rd hardest rock in the world, Dolostone / Limestone.
There are look alike crystals from other locations, Pakistan, Mexico, China, that also use the Herkimer Name. These are similar but not the same. The location of the crystals should be used instead of riding on the popularity of the much rarer quartz crystals from NY.
Help with Measurements :
1" = 25mm = 2.5cm 1 lb / pound = 453 grams
1/2" = 12.5mm 1 g / gram = 5 carats
1/4" = 6.35mm 1 ct / carat = 0.20 grams
Most stones are measured in Grams & mm (Millimeters). Please use these references to better help you understand size, etc.
